I first began working with music in August of 2000 when a friend and I built a digital recording studio in his basement. At the time I knew little about acoustics and the studio was primitive to say the least. The recording booth was 8' wide by 4' deep by 6' tall and all the walls and ceiling were covered with black convoluted foam. The control room was directly beside the booth. We recorded using a Behringer Mixing board as a preamp connected into a Creative's Live Platinum sound card on my friend's computer. With only a pair of stage mics and the Soundforge 4.5 XP packaged with the soundcard, we had completed our studio. From the lack of lighting inside the booth and a previous conversation, we coined the name Dark Matters Recording Studio. Before long, friends and friends of friends started coming in to our little dark chamber to record. For about a year we spent countless hours sweating it out in that tiny room under the heat of a 250 watt light bulb before I found a better location, that is, my own house.
